If somebody is in Ooty, 'The Queen of Hills’ or if you have plans to be there between May 1 and May 3, then you may consider yourself fortunate. What is the hype about? The historical ‘Sullivan Bungalow’ in the sylvan surroundings of Ooty is turning 190 years in May this year. The Nilgiris Documentation Centre has proposed to organize a three-day program from May 1 to May 3 in which the first day would have an exhibition about John Sullivan, the founder of Ooty. Inauguration of 'Nilgiris Souvenir Shop' & folk music and dance programs would be the highlight of second and third day respectively.

British Collector John Sullivan built the bungalow in 1819 at Kannerimukku Badaga village in Kotagiri during his maiden visit to the Nilgiris (Blue Mountains) in 1819. History has it that he stayed at the bungalow during his sojourns until 1823. The bungalow became the property of Church Missionary Society after the collector shifted to Ooty. It then changed hands to Madras Governor S R Lushinton who donated the building for the sick and poor European soldiers. The wheel of time rotates fast and finally a ‘Parsi’ ( a native of the erstwhile Persia) owned the bungalow somewhere up to 1880.
